EARTHQUAKE HITS SOUTH ASIA

April 29th, 2015 by | | Posted in Field Updates

A devastating 7.8 level earthquake hit South Asia last weekend, killing thousands and destroying homes and possessions across Nepal and Northern India. At the last count 5,000 have died in Nepal and 80 in India. But beyond the initial devastation and ruin from the earthquake, the people of Nepal are only beginning to face other life-threatening problems, making recovery even more challenging. Because of the instability of the buildings, people have moved out onto the streets. Lack of sufficient tents and make-shift shelters are leaving many without protection from the rain and other elements. However, the chief concerns are the availability of water and food supplies, which are quickly diminishing.

Until now IGL’s pastors have been unable to communicate with the pastors in Nepal due to damaged and blocked roads and infrastructure. Pastor Johnson, IGL’s Eastern Zonal Coordinator, wrote today describing the situation:

There are lots of people who are in need of immediate relief in Nepal. In one village reached by the Guardian every home had been damaged or destroyed. Residents of Barkobot village in Sindhupalchowk district said they had had no aid despite being just an hour and a half on good roads from Kathmandu. But helicopters have begun ferrying wounded from Gorkha close to the epicenter of the earthquake.

pic2“Heavy rain has added to the hardship of thousands of people forced to sleep rough for fourth night, after the earthquake destroyed their homes. Water, food and power are scarce, raising fears of waterborne diseases. Most of the rescue teams are focusing on the northern part of the Nepal where the epicenter was, and in Katmandu. But there are no much aids of help in the south.”

IGL has pastors on the ground ready to provide relief to victims in Southern Nepal, specifically rice, blankets, waterproof carpets and more. You can help us provide much needed aid to those who have not yet received any.

Stay tuned on our social media and email updates as we will continue to provide updates from the field on the effects of the earthquake and the relief being provided. Meanwhile, please pray with us for those whose lives have been turned upside down.
